マクドナルドでココア Cocoa at McDonald’s

アメリカあめりかのマクドナルドまくどなるどで
ココアここあを飲のむのは大変たいへんでした。

アメリカあめりかにホームステイほーむすていしていた時とき、
ホストファミリほすとふぁみりーーから

“Let’s go to … ドナ〜 ……”

と聞きこえるのですが、何度聞なんどきいてもわからず。

「えっ？どこ？どこに行いくの？」
と思おもいながら着ついて行いくと、
着ついたのはマクドナルドまくどなるどでした。

マクドナルドまくどなるどの発音はつおんは難むずかしいですよね。

カタカナかたかなで書かくとすれば、

• 「ミッ」でいったん止とめて
• 「ドー」をかなり強つよく発音はつおん
• 「ナド」を軽かるく

という感かんじでしょうか。

そして次つぎは「ココアここあ」。

何度なんどもトライとらいしてみます。

• 最初さいしょのコこを強つよく言いって：コ コア
• 真まん中なかのコこを強つよく言いって：ココ ア
• 最後さいごのアあを強つよく言いって：ココ ア

どれも通つうじず、
スペルすぺるを言いったらやっと通つうじました。

“Oh, cocoa.”

発音はつおんは「コーコーこーこー」でした。

その後あと、店員てんにんさんから
“You mean hot chocolate?” と言いわれ、
Hot chocolate でよかったんですね。

やっと通つうじ合あえたことで、
その場ばは笑顔えがおであふれました。

とても貴重きちょうな思おもい出での一ひとつです。

It wasn’t easy to order cocoa at an American McDonald’s.

When I was staying with my host family in the U.S.,
they said to me,

“Let’s go to … dona— …”

No matter how many times I listened,
I had no idea what they were saying.

“Where? Where are we going?”
I wondered as I followed them.

We finally arrived at… McDonald’s.

The pronunciation of “McDonald’s” is tricky.

If I tried to write it in katakana, it might be:

• “Mic” (a short stop)
• “DON” (strong emphasis)
• “alds” (very light)

Then came the word “cocoa.”

I tried saying it in many ways:

• Emphasizing the first “co”: CO–coa
• Emphasizing the middle: co–CO–a
• Emphasizing the last “a”: co–co–A

None of them worked.

But when I spelled it out, they finally understood.

“Oh, cocoa!”

They pronounced it like “coco.”

Then the clerk asked,
“You mean hot chocolate?”

So I should have said hot chocolate.

Once we finally understood each other,
we all smiled.
It became one of my memorable experiences.
