アメリカにホームステイしていたとき（90年代）の話です。
ある日、私が2階の部屋にいると、1階で物音がしました。
「ホストファミリーが帰ってきたのかな？」
そう思って階段を下りていくと、なんと見知らぬ人が冷蔵庫を開けているではありませんか！
驚いた私は思わず、少し直接的な表現で、
“Who are you?”
と聞いてしまいました。
すると、その人は落ち着いた笑顔で一言。
“I’m a milkman.”
確かそう言ったと思います。今なら “milk delivery person” と言うのかもしれませんが。
牛乳配達の人だったのです。
しかし、私にはまだ疑問が残っていました。
「なぜ配達員さんが勝手に冷蔵庫を開けているの？」
後で帰宅したホストファミリーに聞いてみると、
「留守のときは牛乳を冷蔵庫に入れてもらっているのよ。」
とのこと。
なんですと〜〜！
確かに海辺の穏やかな地域で治安はよかったのですが、それでも私にとってはとても驚きの出来事でした。
また、ホストファミリーと配達員さんとの信頼関係が素敵だなと思いました。
ただ今思い出しても、
「玄関の鍵はどうしたのかな？」
「もしかして開いていたのかな？」
と不思議に思います。
海外では、日本とは違う習慣に出会い驚くこともありますが、その国ならではの文化や人との信頼関係を知ることができるのも、ホームステイの魅力の一つですね。
This happened when I was staying with a host family in the United States in the 1990s.
One day, I was upstairs when I heard a noise coming from the first floor.
I thought, “Maybe my host family has come home.”
When I went downstairs, I was surprised to see a stranger opening the refrigerator!
Without thinking, I asked rather directly,
“Who are you?”
The man smiled calmly and replied,
“I’m a milkman.”
At least, that’s how I remember it.
He was a milkman, a person who delivered milk.
Nowadays, people might say “milk delivery person” instead.
However, I still had a question.
Why was the delivery person opening the refrigerator?
Later, I asked my host family about it.
They said,
“When we’re not home, the milkman puts the milk in the refrigerator.”
What?!
The area was a quiet seaside community and seemed very safe, but it was still quite surprising to me.
I also thought it was wonderful that the host family and the milkman trusted each other so much.
Even now, I sometimes wonder,
“What about the front door?”
“Was it unlocked?”
Living abroad can be surprising because of different customs, but learning about another culture and the trust between people is one of the great things about a homestay experience.
